Alan Chambers, MBE, led the first successful unsupported attempt to reach the Geographic North Pole from Canada in 2000 with no external help and support. No food caches, dog teams, air re-supplies, over-snow vehicles or relay teams. This followed what he referred to as his ‘successful failure’, the attempt to do the same in 1998 when rescued from treacherous circumstances. When many others would have given up, Alan planned and researched meticulously, living for months at a time with Inuit communities in Northern Canada.
Polar Explorer Alan Chambers
He and Charlie Paton, who had never skied before, were the two members of the party to reach the Pole having travelled 472 nautical miles dragging 250 pounds of stores each, the weight of a baby elephant.
On the journey they faced incredible adversity, including being isolated on an ice flow where they drifted 400 nautical miles. Keep Walking – Alan earned a place in the history books in the great tradition of Polar exploration and was awarded the MBE for ‘outstanding leadership in the face of extreme adversity.’
He recruited for the Team Polar 2000 expedition, organised sponsorship, trained the team and led them on the ice. Keep Walking – Leadership Learning in Action – Alan Chambers & Richard Hale. Key Lessons In Leadership.
